New Home, New Country: A Gentle Checklist

Moving to a new country—especially after crisis—can feel like starting life again with half of your tools missing. This checklist is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about small, realistic steps over the first 30 days.

Week 1: Safety & Essentials

  • Learn and write down the local emergency number.
  • Identify the nearest clinic, pharmacy and grocery shop.
  • Save key addresses and directions on your phone.
  • Ask which neighbourhoods or routes to avoid, if any.

Week 2: Paper & Places

  • Organise documents in one folder (physical or digital).
  • Note which documents are missing and who can help you get copies.
  • Walk your local area in daylight to learn landmarks.
  • Find a library, community centre, or park where you feel relatively calm.

Week 3: People & Routines

  • Choose one regular event to attend (service, class, support group, market).
  • Practice a simple introduction in the local language if needed.
  • Set a basic daily routine: wake time, meals, quiet moment, sleep target.

Week 4: Future Seeds

  • Make a list of small skills you could offer (childcare, cooking, fixing things, translation).
  • Note one or two organisations that might offer training or volunteering.
  • Write down three hopes for the next year, even if they feel far away.

Progress, Not Perfection

There will be days when even brushing your teeth and making tea feel like a victory. That is okay. The goal is not to “arrive” quickly. It is to slowly plant roots that can hold both your past and your new beginning.
